He'd be Mad to go to Wednesday!

It's that time of the year again, and the rumour-mill is working overtime. As usual, some rumours are ludicrous and have to be taken with a big pinch of salt, while others are quite plausible. Which category does this one fit into?

One rumour that seems to be gathering pace since their fluky win at Wembley is that Mads Andersen could be off to Wednesday:

My View

All players move on eventually, and I'm sure there would be no shortage of suitors for our 25 year old centre-back, but a bigger club than near-neighbours Wednesday would surely be the next challenge for a player of Andersen's calibre?

Yes, Wednesday somehow pulled-off a surprise win at Wembley against a better side who'd already whooped them twice that season, and yes they'll be plying their trade in a higher league come August, but our friends from Hillsborough will likely be the Championship's whipping-boys next season, and if Andersen was to leave Oakwell, I think he deserves better, and should set his sights higher.

View from the Terraces

BFC Pundit Neil from Tykes TV commented:

"There is interest from several Championship clubs, with Wednesday rumoured to be one of them, but given that it’s a close Yorkshire rival I don’t think it will sit well with many Reds fans. As ever though, money and agents talk."

BFC Pundit Ant Clare @antclare78 added:

"I’m sure all Barnsley fans will not want to see Mads Andersen leave the Reds, especially for 'the massive' down the road. He owes us nothing and has been an amazing servant and captain, but it would leave a sour taste in the mouth if he transferred to our rivals"

Andy Sage from In the Red Corner gave his reaction:

"Mads to wednesday? to me that simply cannot happen. Winnall went from hero to zero in a similar situation and this cannot be allowed to happen again, regardless how much money there is involved. Mads , don't do it!"

Wider Perspectives

Final thoughts for now...

The Great Dane is in contract until the end of next season, so the Reds would likely command a decent fee for the in-demand player. If channelled into the team, the funds we recoup from the sale of Mads could be used by Duff to further strengthen the squad, and build a promotion winning side, but remaining at Oakwell next season would be the best possible outcome for the player and the club in my humble opinion. I'm taking this one with a big pinch of salt.

To be continued....
